Kohala Coast Hotels

The Kohala Coast area of the Big Island is located 20 miles north of the Kailua-Kona region. Many refer to Kolaha as the “Gold” Coast and we believe for good reason. Many, if not all of the island's luxury hotels are located here.

The area is a somewhat barren landscape of old lava flows and beautiful white sand beaches. The hotels have each carved out their own “paradise”, pushing aside the lava and planting exquisite gardens around the properties to highlight the island's beauty. There is almost no rain here, and the temperature can soar here to 90 degrees plus!

Additionally, there are also many exciting sights around for you to explore, from beaches and reefs to petroglyphs and luaus it makes the Kohala Coast a must see destination on Hawaii.

The attractions along the Kohala Coast are definitely the beaches, hotel complexes and the historical Heiaus and petroglyphs. All are worth the time and effort to find and explore.

The beaches can be hard to find, if not down right impossible, so remember to get a good map and look it over before you begin your journey, or check out our Hawaii beach guide! With all the spectacular sights, you may just miss the turn off. Even if you are not staying as a guest, most of the hotel complexes will allow you to come in and poke around, some even offering some very nice shopping opportunities if you are so inclined.

Shopping opportunities along the Kohala Coast are offered up in abundance by the resorts. They have, at great expense, built up and maintained some of the finest shops and galleries on the entire island.

Make sure that the wallet is full and those credit cards have been paid down, you will need every ounce of extra cash available while here. The smaller towns in the area offer Hawaii at its best, the shopping experience that can only be had here in the islands. To get the most out of your experience I suggest trying them both on for size, you never know what you will find.
