You have saved your money for years, planning to come and sit on the famous Black Sand beach, trade winds blowing through your hair. Or maybe its just kicking it around a pool with a paper umbrella accompanying your favorite beverage. Whatever the case may be, you must also think about a roof over your head. Where should you stay? How much should you spend? Are you close to that amazing beach or stuck in the middle of asphalt and concrete? There are these and many more questions you should answer before you come. The great thing about the big island is it offers visitors many options when it comes to lodging. From budget hotels to five star beachfront accommodations, it’s all here waiting for you. So come on, enjoy all that Hawaii has to offer and come and find your umbrella in the sun.

Hawaii Activities

The Big Island of Hawaii is home to many attractions and tours. You just have to think of it as 3,000 miles of north/south travel all wrapped up on one island. Just within a day you can hike in a tropical rain forest, mountain bike over a volcanic desert, snowboard the crest of a volcano or fish off the coast of one of the world’s most beautiful islands. Maybe that is why so many people come and enjoy these Hawaii activities year round. From triathlons to sports fishing competitions, surfing to marathons and maybe just a little time in the sun, Hawaii offers it all. Just think of Hawaii as America’s playground and the Big Island is its sandbox. Just ask yourself this, who doesn't love a good, old fashioned sandbox?

Hawaii Attractions

The main attractions on the island are Volcanoes National Park , outside of Hilo and the Mauna Kea Observatories. Professional tour companies can reach the latter, as a rental car cannot give you all the access you may want. You could also spend a day at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau or “a place of refuge” south of Kailua-Kona. This reconstructed village is much the way it stood before the European explorers came. Just to the north of Kailua-Kona (and south of the airport) is Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic park. This park offers a look at traditional Hawaiian land divisions and fish ponds (the beach isn't too bad either!) If your up along the Kohala Coast the check out Pu' ukohola Heiau National Historic park. This park has one of the best preserved, and still utilized heiau's on the island. If getting out is not your style, you could always take a sunset walk on a black, green or white sand beach, as some of the best attractions and sights here are free.

Hawaii Entertainment

If you are looking for entertainment then you are in luck. The Big Island offers up some of the most unique and inherently “Hawaiian” options available on any of the islands. Authentic Hawaii luaus abound here, without the Honolulu atmosphere or throngs of camera touting tourists. Most of the larger hotels offer nightclubs and bars, if that is your fancy and then there is the good ‘ol stroll on the beach, if waiting for the sun to go down is your thing. Whatever it may be, the Big Island offers what you are looking for, all wrapped up in a tidy package, waiting for you to open.

Kailua-Kona & Hilo Shopping

Shopping on the Big Island offers up some challenges. Gone are the gobs of ratty, tourist shops and the cheesy tourists. What you do have access to is a great experience in the old Hawaii style, sans strip malls and chain stores. There are plenty of options here for shopping. Some of the best can be found in both Hilo and Kailua-Kona but are by no means your only choices. Many unique shops offer special gifts in the small communities on the island.

Without giving it all away, the best advice is to come and explore the island. Poke around on the back roads and small villages and see what you can find. These are the trips that make gifts special, the ones that are off the beaten path and that you will remember buying for years to come.
